Transforming a Brown Italianate Kitchen into an Airy, French-Inspired Interior

June 26th, 2025

Kitchen with freshly painted green cabinets and stunning wooden island.

You don’t need extensive renovations to transform your home’s interiors—and this project proves it!

Our client wanted to update dated cabinetry and details in their kitchen, bathroom, laundry room, and mudroom. Instead of tearing out their high-quality cabinets, they chose to work with what they had, adding a fresh coat of paint and modern touches while preserving their lake house’s lived-in charm.

Our client trusted PMV to paint other rooms in their home, so when they invited us into this special remodel, we were more than happy to jump in.

Kitchen

The kitchen featured beautiful tile floors, wood cabinets, a large central island, and natural tones on the walls. Rather than remove the warm, terra-cotta colored tile, we chose a gray cabinet color with strong green-blue undertones that complimented the warm tones in the tile. Creamy white details and new brass hardware invited soft light into the space, transforming a once dark kitchen into one that is airy, inviting, and inspired.

Kitchen Island

Updating the kitchen island was one of the most unique projects we’ve ever undertaken. We used the existing framework, redesigning the face to match the style of the cabinetry doors.

Rather than painting the new island doors, we finished the warm walnut with a deep warm stain that balanced the tones while showing off the wood’s natural beauty. Bronze details on the feet of the corner posts tied the island together with the rest of the kitchen hardware.

Bathroom

The warm tile in the kitchen extended into the attached bathroom. The room is small, but filled with ample natural light. So, we used the same warm gray for the bathroom vanity and a playful wallpaper to fill the space with cozy touches reminiscent of the French countryside.

Mudroom

A small, transitional space, the mudroom features a large built-in. We painted the space a coordinating cream and a gray that’s a few shades lighter than the original built-in color. The change kept the space feeling cohesive without being overwhelmed.

Laundry Room

The laundry room windows pour natural light into the space. Our client wanted to keep the wood cabinets in the laundry room, so we chose the same paint for the walls as we used for the kitchen and bathroom cabinets. While a deeper tone on the walls might make other spaces seem small or cramped, the abundance of natural light balances everything out, creating a warm and inviting workspace.
