PMV Painting repainting dining room chair

Our talented painters can breathe life into all kinds of new objects!

During many of the estimates we give at PMV, homeowners will ask questions about what can and can’t be repainted. You may be surprised to find out the number of items that can, in fact, be painted.

Painting many items comes down to knowing the right products and processes to use in order to ensure a lasting finish. With over 20 years of experience, we’ve learned how to paint all kinds of items.

Painting an object can be a cost-effective way of giving your space new life without having to purchase something new or send something useful to the landfill. What follows is a list of some of the more common requests we get from homeowners around the Kalamazoo area, and how we answer.

Aluminum Window Casings – Aluminum casings/sashes on the exterior of a house can be painted with products specifically formulated for that purpose.

Aluminum or Vinyl Soffit/Fascia – If aluminum or vinyl has been washed and appears faded, or if a color change is desired, it can be painted with products specifically formulated for that purpose.

Bathroom TileYou may be surprised to learn that tile can be painted! We would scuff the tile and use a Urethane Modified Acrylic (UMA) primer.

Exterior Brick – Exposed brick can be primed and painted.

Fireplace Brick – Brick around a fireplace can be primed and painted. Some customers also request a “whitewash” look that is done by diluting a product to create a see-through effect that allows you to see the character of the brick while adding color.

GuttersMetal gutters can be painted to match the siding or trim.

Items Painted with Oil-Based PaintIn many older homes, trim and doors have been previously painted with oil based paint. Those items can be primed to form a secure bond, and then painted with a latex trim paint.

Metal Doors/Trim on a Building Exterior – We can and often do paint metal doors and trim. If there are any rusted spots we can clean them up and apply a rust-blocking primer before painting with a product designed for metal like Sherwin Williams DTM.

Metal Siding/RoofingMetal siding or roofing on commercial buildings can be repainted! Like most surfaces, it needs to be cleaned first. If there are any rusted spots we can clean them up and apply a rust-blocking primer before painting with a product designed for metal.

Metal Stairway RailingPainted metal railings can be re-painted with acrylic modified urethane.

Utility Boxes/Pipes (House Exterior) – Exterior boxes/pipes can often be painted at the same time as the siding to help them blend into the house.

Vinyl siding like this can be repainted using specialty products designed to keep vinyl from warping.

Vinyl Siding – Vinyl siding can be painted with paint formulated specifically for vinyl. When painting vinyl, it’s generally recommended to choose a similar or lighter color. Painting dark color on vinyl can cause it to retain too much heat, which can lead to the siding warping prematurely.

Wood Dressers/End Tables/Dining Tables+ChairsWood furniture can be given new life in our shop! At PMV we will prime wood furniture and then use a furniture grade 2k urethane. We sometimes use a final clear coat for extra durability. You can see examples of painted furniture in the gallery for our shop.

Wood Trim – Unpainted wood trim can be primed and then painted with latex trim paint like BM Scuff-X. Some painters (including PMV) will repaint the wall after caulking/priming/painting.
